Dolphins And Ice Cream

My boyfriends mother is staying with us for a week or so. Doesn't sound too problematic really. Don't be fooled, it gets more so. You see during this time my lovely boyfriend is working, so I have to amuse, entertain and otherwise fill in the time during the day with his mum. And I had two days notice of her arrival. Don't get me wrong this is not an evil mother-in-law situation, his mum is lovely, the problem is me. I had a whole lot of things planned this week, not very interesting things admittedly, but things I wanted to get done. I get slightly miffed when my plans are wrecked. Ok, a lot miffed. Also I need to be able to get away. I do not do well when I have to play nice all day for days at a time. I need to be able to do nothing, have silence or be madly busy with music blaring. Also I was planning on dieting this week as next week I might have to brave a bikini. The thought scares the living crap out of me and I thought I'd up my exercise and be strict about treats in preparation. No chance now. Phooey.

Anyway, on to the actual day. We headed down to the beach near me (a complete joy when you live in a city) and had lunch in a walled garden at a local hotel. Most enjoyable. From there we headed down to the beach itself, and went for a long walk and more gabbing. As we headed back along the beach we found a good spot for a seat. We hadn't been seated long before we spotted dolphins frolicking about. We watched for a while. Then, as a ship came in to the estuary headed for the harbour, we were treated to the sight of them cruising along in front of it, jumping in teams and generally larking about with the big metal floaty thing. Man, they were having fun. I love dolphins. They always seem to have time for fun, even when hunting down food they know how to have a laugh. Possibly at us. It's just a feeling I have. I mean, there they are, all sleek and swimmy, dashing about chasing fish or just cruising the oceans, jumping 'cause they can, no mortgage, car insurance or job to worry about. Ok, they do have to be concerned about our stupid fishing nets, and the crap we dump in the oceans, but they do not make rods for their own backs. So who's the freaking smart species here ?

Slight digression there. After watching the dolphins, and catching sight of a few seals, we headed for ice cream And what fabulous ice cream. There's a little Italian place that does the most amazing home made ice cream. Yummmmm. Add a little shopping, and a new dress purchased by said lovely sort of mum-in-law, and it was a really nice day. Of course then I had to cook dinner. I like cooking, I just don't like cooking for people other than me and my man. In case I suck. Ah, the sour smell of perfectionism again. Never mind. My night is winding down now, little.

I let you know how tomorrow goes. If I remember.

Ice-cream, a beach AND Dolphins......well that's just plain greedy!!!

It sounds lovely where you are!

I also understand the stress that goes with a visit from your 'other half's relatives'...it can be torturous, luckily your 'sort-of-mother-in-law' sounds nice though, even whilst completely disrupting any plans you had for this week.

Why not set her up in the house with a cup of tea and a good book, then head out for a wander, under the guise of doing some shopping (I've done this and it does give you a well earned break from constantly playing nice!).
